Frequently Asked Questions

Then how do I know my child has it?

Ninety five percent (95%) of the time, JIA will present in a child before JIA-related uveitis. When your child is diagnosed with JIA, the rheumatologist should advise you to immediately screen your child for iritis (a subset of uveitis). Depending on the age of your child, gender, subtype of JRA (pauciarticular, polyarticular, systemic, etc.), and ANA test results, you should screen your child every three (3) to twelve (12) months.

Here is an algorithm used to determine how often a child with JIA should be screened: JIA/JRA Eye Screening Algorithm
